Quartz (properly called Engineered Quartz) countertops are a countertop possibility that provides virtually endless choice.  There are dozens of manufacturers, each with their own colour line.  Some examples are Cambria, Silestone, Caesarstone, Viatera (LG), CQS, Vicostone, Hanstone, Baystone, Radianz, Zodiaq, TCE.  These slabs are made of over 90% natural quartzite ground up and mixed with an epoxy resin, then poured into a mold to harden, and finally polished smooth.  The quartzite component makes these slabs hard.  Although the resin component makes them less heat resistant than pure natural quartzite or granite, they are a practical countertop choice.

Advantages of quartz

  • It is non-porous and doesn’t need to be sealed
  • Won’t stain with oils or absorb liquids
  • No fissures or pitting for bacteria to get into
  • Harder to chip or crack than natural stone

Quartz has been popular in countertops for a number of years.  It can be found in almost any colour and several different textures.  Some people prefer the regular patterning available in man-made quartz, compared to the variable and unique patterning found in natural stone.  Quartz is also available with no pattern; just a plain smooth monocolour, that some people are looking for.  Quartz is available in a plain bright white, something that just can’t be found in a natural stone.
