When choosing the perfect custom stone for your next design, it’s a great idea to be fully informed on all aspects in order to make a well-rounded decision. Following key custom stone care and maintenance guidelines will ensure your stone surface looks beautiful for a lifetime. Top do’s and don’ts we commonly like to share with our clients include:
DO make an informed choice when selecting your custom stone:
When choosing the right custom stone for your next project, it is always beneficial to make an educated decision. Weighing the benefits of each custom stone type from quartz to marble can steer you towards selecting the best choice for your project. Here at Dauter Stone, our industry-leading team of experts are available Monday to Friday to assist you with all of your custom stone-related questions and needs so don’t hesitate to reach out.
If it is recommended, DO seal your custom stone:
Not all custom stone types are created equal. Some stone types including marble, limestone, soapstone and granite require a sealant to protect the surface for years to come. A properly sealed custom stone surface can prevent stains from water-based or oil-based products while also acting as a preventative measure against etching and scratching. At Dauter Stone, we leave the guess work out of the equation by sealing your surface in-house prior to installation. For an additional service, our team can easily come to your home and reseal when needed.
DO choose the right stone type for your preferred design application:
Looking for a new kitchen countertop or perhaps a shower surround? Different custom stone types are ideal for a variety of projects. Granite is a top choice for it’s stunning and timeless visual appeal. In addition, it can be beautifully incorporated into countertops, flooring and cladding due to it’s incredibly strong nature and resistance to heat. In addition, quartz is another great option due to it’s durable, low-maintenance profile and vast array of colour options.
DON’T use harsh or abrasive cleaners
Harsh or abrasive cleaners are best to be avoided in order to extend the beauty of your custom stone. Simply use a soft cloth, mild dish soap and water to easily clean up any stain.
DON’T place hot pans directly on the surface
Avoiding the placement of hot pans or cooking materials directly on the surface of your custom stone is highly recommended. While some stone types are heat-resistant, none are heat-proof. Prolonged or excessive heat exposure can weaken sealants, cause cracks and potentially, decolouration. To avoid this from occurring we recommended using hot pads or trivets.
DON’T cut directly on your custom stone surface
While cutting directly on your custom stone surface may seem like a convenient option, it isn’t recommended. Scratches can easily occur which can lend to a deterioration of the surface. In addition, small surface scratches allow bacteria to enter making your surface more difficult to clean. Using a cutting board at all times is an easy and quick fix.
